Global Terrorism: Twisted Terms to Hijack History

By: Alice Brooks

Since 9/11, the U.S. has once again positioned itself as the great enemy of global terrorism in the world. But it is hard to swallow this tale if you’re a student of history. Governments that have acted with terror against its own citizens have frequently been kept in power and considered the great friends of western heads of state. Often terrorist is a term turned on the tongue of the beholder.
Friendly governments and the enemy of our ideological enemy is often considered our friend. We need look no further than Afghanistan and Iraq to test this theory. The Taliban Government and al Qaida were trained and funded by the United States. This fact was even documented in Charlie Wilson’s War, a book turned Hollywood movie. Many other well documented books and writings published in the past decade detail the same doings.

Today’s terrorists in Afghanistan were called freedom fighters by the Reagan Administration as they delivered death to Soviet troops in 1989 in what the U.S. supported as a Soviet Vietnam. On the other hand, Saddam Hussein was brought to power with CIA support. In fact, up through the late 80’s until his 1990 invasion of Kuwait, he was a friend of Washington.

Reports of brutality and even use of chemical weapons against the Kurdish Iraqis did not detain the Bush Sr. inner circle from continued close relations with Hussein. As late as the spring of 1989, the Administration continued seeking to improve its relations with Iraq. Relations were strained after revelations of clandestine weapon sales to Iran during the Iran-Iraq War in which Iraq was led to believe it was the exclusive recipient of U.S. aid.

A March 24, 1989, State Department Memo refers to “interest in broadening US-Iraqi ties” to Iraqi diplomats after acknowledging Iraqi development of missiles as well as chemical and biological weapons. (You can find a full timeline on the fuzzy friendship between the White House and Hussein at http://www.historycommons.org)

Only after Hussein invaded Kuwait, a move he was led to believe had complacent U.S. support, did he become an enemy of the western powers. But was it not global terrorism when, during a decade of UN sanctions on that country, President Clinton and Prime Minister Blair maintained a continual bombing spree. The cradle of Mesopotamia and one of the most socially developed infrastructures in the Arab world was sent hurdling back to the dark ages.

Did you know estimates from UNICEF and the World Health Organization calculate UN sanctions in the 90s killed over 1 million Iraqi’s, 60% of them children? Meanwhile over 4,100 Iraqis died under the continual Clinton/Blair bombing raids.

What was the point of creating continued misery? You think it could have been aimed at making people happy for the eventual U.S. invasion and subsequent oil grab? Will these policies of using force under false pretenses stop (like weapons of mass destruction and ending terrorism) now that Obama is president?

“I call it stealing Iraq's oil - the second largest reserves in the world. The ‘benchmark,’ or goal, the Bush administration has been working on furiously since the US invaded Iraq is privatization of Iraq's oil. Now they have Congress blackmailing the Iraqi Parliament and the Iraqi people: no privatization of Iraqi oil, no reconstruction funds,” wrote Ann Wright, a retired U.S. Army Colonel and diplomat. Her article can be found here: http://www.truthout.org/article/ann-wright-what-congress-really-approved-benchmark-no-1-privatizing-iraqs-oil-us-companies.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, global terrorism has become a key component in building the New World Order to keep the big capitalists on top. Part of that is grabbing up oil for the empire. Iraq is just one source country for the resource in the region.

The 21st Century Oil Wars are not likely to end under either Democrats or Republicans who are beholden to the interests of big capital. The question is open for debate. Who poses the true terrorist threat to world peace with justice?
