  • Black Berry Winter  By : Andre Leite Alves
“Son, the old man said. In my time I et things a man don’t like to think on. I was a sojer and I rode with Gin’ Forrest, and them things we et when the time come.” We turn to heaven and seek help to achieve things that seems impossible for us to achieve or do not exist in real life, hoping to get them someday by relaying on the supernatural forces. Our disposable western culture does not let us see that many of the answers we seek are already here around all of us; the generations that came before ours have a lot to advise us and in many cases we mistreat them and do not pay attention to what it can be passed on to us. Many things we seek are in front of us and we fail to see it, many problems we encounter in our lives are products of our own actions. As Americans we have the tendency of not taking responsibility for our own acts and we always try to find someone to blame.
Old Jebb himself has a lot to share about his life, since he lived a long and ironic 100+ long years of life, in the old days it was very unusual for anyone to live past 70 years old. “Too strong to die. When I was a young feller just comen on and seen how things wuz, I prayed the Lawd. I said, Oh Lawd , gimme the strength and me strong fer to do and in-dure… The Lawd give me my prayer and my strength. But now He gone off and forgot me and left me alone with my strength. A man doan know what to pray fer, and him mortal.” His own belief made him strong and allowed him to live a long life; he
never gave himself credit and always believed that outside sources were responsible for his long life. He is a warrior and a survivor that managed to overcome slavery, racial discrimination and social segregation. Had to seek inner strength even when everything seemed lost and without hope bypassing social labeling. The majority of people today fail to believe in their own capacity and try to relate personal achievement to outside forces due to cultural and historical beliefs.
Winters be devastating and bring many parallel problems along with them such as depression, suicide and other psychological problems. The natural forces once again prove to the human being that nothing is stronger than nature itself. The human race could be categorized as a grain of sand on a beach when compared to all elements in the whole universe. “Whenever there was a flood, people from half of the country would come down… If it didn’t ruin your crop you couldn’t plow and you felt like taking a holiday to celebrate. If it did ruin your crop, there wasn’t anything to do except try to take your mind off the mortgage if you were rich enough to have a mortgage.” Life has to go on like everything else that surround us, as human beings faith is the last thing that dies inside of us. Many things die during the harsh cold months of winter and once spring time comes life goes on again. For human beings the same principle applies with our everyday life problems, they come and go. The seasons of the year or the waves on the sea represents that well.
Faith is always present on our lives no matter how harsh things get, we always believe better days ahead of us will come and soon everything will be back to normal. “She wasn’t a big woman, but she was clear and brisk about everything she did and looked everyone in the eye from her own blue eyes and tanned face. She has been the first woman in the country to ride a horse…. I have seen her snatch up a pump gun…” Mom illustrates it well with her strong character and personality; she has to be in charge of many things around the house and at the same time take care, educate and be a whole model for her son. She breaks many historical taboos and overcomes many sexist issues that were present in the old days. “She was a self reliant woman.” Has her own energy source and does not rely on anyone else in order to survive and many depend on it instead. Many cultures even today still treat women as second class citizens and do not give equal chances to them, as human beings we use a very small portion of our brain’s capacity and many of us is convinced that we are the greatest specie in the planet earth.
When someone does not have the appropriate tools to succeed this person has to use other alternatives in order to get what they dream of and Not in all cases, there are poor people with good character and honesty that manage to change their lives with hard work and overcome misery. In many cases the crime could be a quick answer to their problems on a short term basis and later it can bring many devastating issues, such the loss of someone that was killed by a criminal. Another dangerous issue is that since many people feel denied and invisible to society itself they think it is ok to commit all these crimes since they do not have any self worth, low self steam and feel that they do not have anything to loose by the consequences of their own acts. “I had never seen Milt Alley, but I knew who he was. He was a squatter and lived up the hills a way, on a shirt-tail patch of set on edge in a cabin. He was a poor white trash. He had lots of children.” With misery the social labeling system comes along as a present parallel issue that often we do not think about it since it turns into part of our everyday life. A good example is the person that collects the garbage, we all know he or she exists however do we know their names and anything about them? Ironically they probably know a lot about the people they pickup the trash from just by the waste itself.
Without the proper guidance and education is very hard for someone to become “someone” in life. The human being is not bad by nature; the environment where this human being resides is what has the most influence over the humans. Many correctional programs have failed to succeed because once that human being was released and returned home, the whole cycle would start again due to the influence of others and the environment. We try to raise our kids to the best of our possibilities and hope that they carry on the same idea to the newer generations. As my parents use to say, we have to be better than what they were and so on. “That is what has happened since the morning when the tramp leaned his face down at me and showed his teeth and said: stop following me, if you don’t I will cut your throat, you little son of a bitch. That’s what he said but I followed him all these years.” If a tragic event happens and we loose our parents while we are young, then our destiny changes forever and we might end up being something else different that our parents intent for us.. “As for Little Jebb, he grew up to be a mean and ficey Negro. He killed another Negro in a fight and got sent to the penitentiary.” Both boys symbolize that well in a human being form disregarding their social economical class, race or religious belief, as human beings we need to look at each other as humans and not by the color of our skin. We must accept reality and understand that no one is perfect; life itself is a challenge that we all must to face it. Make use of all things available to us and do not feel sorry about yourselves. Self belief can be the stronger tool available to us in order to have emotional, material and spiritual satisfaction.
